By the end of Chapter 7 ("How to Ignite a Hotbed"), I knew the real reason why small, volunteer-run clubs in out of the way locations keep developing world-class athletes again and again, seemingly out of nowhere. In Chapter 5 ("Primal Cues") I'd discovered the common feature that the last ten holders of the 100m sprint record all have in common that, fascinatingly, helps explain their speed.
But most importantly perhaps, Coyle reveals just how important passion, practice and persistence are in developing talent, and the specific type of practice that is the most powerful of all. Highly recommended reading for any sports parents who want to understand how true talent can be created and developed.
